We first heard Chris Colston when he entered our Songwriter Competition last year. We were impressed with this stage presence and vocals, but knew there was a lot more potential to come in his songwriting. He then released an EP in February of this year and we could see some development, but still felt like there was plenty more room to grow in his writing. Colston entered our Songwriter Competition again this year, and before the preliminary round started, we talked for a little bit. He told me that he was writing some new material and was really starting to find his “sound”. During his set, he introduced the second song as “one of his new ones”, and as he strummed you could see his comfort level dramatically increase. You could easily hear and feel the difference in the song versus his previous catalog and the judges certainly felt the same. The tweak in style definitely suited him! He made a big enough impression on The Tap that they immediately booked him to open for Read Southall at the end of the month!
I of course made my way out to the Southall show early to catch Colston’s full-band set and I couldn’t have been more impressed. His band, his vocals over the band, the new songs, etc…we’re all top-notch! So when he informed me that he was releasing an acoustic video to the song that made a big impression on us during the competition, I knew it was going to be something. Sure enough…it is!
