Troy Cartwright is one of the best emerging songwriters in the Texas scene. His self-tiled, 2015 album showcased the Dallas native’s impressive lyrical ability, and left us with the impression that it would only be onward and upward from there. With his new 5 track EP, “Don’t Fade”, set to drop tomorrow, we’re excited to share with you that our initial impression has been confirmed.
The genre-bending, Rob Baird produced EP is packed with rootsy music, expressive songwriting, and smooth vocals. Cartwright’s soulful delivery of the detailed stories found in each track make this an EP you play from start to finish… and then hit the play button again. While it’s not a massive departure from the style of his previous album, it’s evident that the growth between efforts has certainly helped him find “his sound”. This time around the lyrics are a little sharper, the delivery is a little more confident, and the stories are a little more intricate.
The first track “Never Coming Back” (Cartwright, Ty Graham) immediately captures the listener’s attention with its catchy rhythm, funky groove and bluesy vibe. You can feel the personal sentiment of the song, and it transitions perfectly in to his Top 20 single “Busted” (Cartwright). The lead cut was our first glimpse in to EP when it was released back in June, and it gave us every indication that this project would be special. With its success on the charts and 150K+ Spotify streams, it obvious that fans concur. “Nobody but You” (Cartwright) details the emotional battle of heartbreak and the desire for reconciliation. The warm music and up-beat tempo, put an interesting spin on the somber topic, and the punch of the powerful chorus makes it a great concert tune. The album finishes with a stripped-down, acoustic contemplation of the effects distance can have on a relationship. Detailing a romance full of questions and little resolve, the track’s mellow energy provides a great conclusion to the musical production.
Our *PICK* of the album is the title track “Don’t Fade” (Cartwright, Clint Daniels). “This was a co-write with a great writer named Clint Daniels, and the day we wrote this was actually our first time meeting each other” Cartwright explained. “For him, ‘Don’t Fade’ was about watching his kid grow up and wishing he could freeze time for the little stuff like watching your kid play soccer. For me, it was just having a moment in time that you never want to end. There are certain memories; either in a relationship or with good friends that you know in the moment mean a great deal to you. You wish you could keep that feeling alive forever, and that’s how we came up with the premise.”
The EP drops tomorrow (10.7), so make sure you grab a copy, but in the meantime enjoy a sneak peek of the title track “Don’t Fade” below!
