Spotify is testing out a “Storyline” feature, that’s similar to the stories component of Instagram and Snapchat. Basically, it’ll allow artists to feature multiple images and text that takes listeners into the creative process of the song. To me, this is a game changer! Artists have long been posting their musical content on social platforms, but now they’ll get to post a bit of social content on a music platform! With Facebook edging its way into irrelevance with Gen Z and Instagram making it difficult to direct people outside of its platform, being able to provide someone who’s currently listening to your song with additional social content is huge! And I think it’s just the beginning. If this feature proves to be popular, I can’t imagine the ability for artists to provide social content to their fans stopping there. This obviously has cool implications for people who are current fans of an artist’s music, but I think the bigger benefit for artists is their ability to seamlessly connect content beyond the song with listeners who discover that artists through a playlist, station, or algorithm.
As of right now, I’ve only seen it on a few big pop songs, but with the buzz circulating about it, I bet it will be rolled out to the rest of the platform soon enough.
