Jordan Nix and the Day Drinkers trailblazed through the past year, winning different songwriter competitions and releasing debut album “Happier Than Normal.” Nix continues the streak with the release of new EP “Cold and Lonely” tomorrow, Feb. 9, just in time for that Valentine Day’s heartache. The EP release show will be on Feb. 16 at The Tap in College Station.
Cold and Lonely EP:
- Whiskey and Wine
- Cold and Lonely
- Love is Hard (ft. Hannah Kay)
- I’m Done
Recorded in three different places, “Cold and Lonely” was carefully curated over several months by Nix and Robert Herrera (lead guitar) with fiddle from Wes Barlow. This rough-ended EP includes orchestral and western fiddle, banjo, acoustic guitar, and duet vocals. All four tracks tell a story of heartbreak, addiction, and loneliness in the rawest and real way.
“When we sat down to record our debut album ‘Happier Than Normal,’ we decided to leave most of the sad songs out of it,” said Nix. “We still had a set of really good sad songs that we just had to record, even if in a more broken down acoustic style.”
Nix’s favorite track is “I’m Done.” The 8-lined track begins with soft banjo picking and slow acoustic guitar. When vocals begin, the hurt and pain of love is apparent in Nix’s vulnerable grunge notes. The song is a declaration of self-worth, quitting what breaks your heart.
“Love is Hard” features Hannah Kay’s sultry vocals. Nix wrote this track with his brothers Jason and Josh, but couldn’t decide what was off about it. Kay and Nix met at the TMP’s Texas Music Cruise Battle of the Bands and decided then and there to duet. This tune highlights a musician falling in and out of love with heavy hitting lyrics like “the worst part was loving you at all.” “Love is Hard” is sure to bring chills to listeners.
“To finally be able to hear what had been playing in my head for so long was really one of the coolest things I’ve been able to be a part of from the start of the writing process to the final recording,” said Nix. “We can’t thank Hannah enough for stepping in and knocking it out of the park.”
“Cold and Lonely” is a favorite among the TMP team. It begins with a somber, almost wedding-like violin. The entire lyrical composition of this track reels listeners into Nix’s breakup story. Lyrics like “the ugly truth about me and you is I always knew you’d leave” highlight the mood of the entire EP.
Our *PICK* of this album is “Whiskey and Wine.” This track has just the right amount airspace in between Nix’s steady vocals. The breaks between lines leave time for reflection on what was just said. “Whiskey and Wine” is a great representation of Nix’s raw talent as a songwriter and vocalist.
Be sure to stream the EP on Spotify and download it on iTunes tomorrow. You’ll also be able to hear it here on our TMP Spotify Playlist.
