Contest Format

The contest will take course over 3 rounds:

Round 1: Video Submission Round

Contestants will submit a YouTube video of a live, solo/acoustic performance of an original song.  The video must have live music and live vocals (nothing prerecorded) and must be an accurate portrayal of what we expect to see in the contest.  While video quality is not important, we must be able to clearly hear the vocals and music.  A recording from a phone of an acoustic song in the quiet of your living room is perfect! The contestant must currently reside, originally be from, or play a high percentage of shows in the region and our contest will be geared towards country, Americana, roots, folk, southern rock, or any other genre you would see on the Texas music charts.  Along with the YouTube Video, contestants will be asked to submit their names, a $20 entry fee, and their contact information.

Judging: The TMP team along with professional songwriters, studio producers, talent buyers, booking agents, managers etc… will judge contestants on three categories: songwriting, vocal ability, and musical performance!

Advancing: The contestants that receive the top 20 scores from the video submission round, will advance to the preliminary live performance rounds (although we do reserve the right to take more than 20).

Round 2: Preliminary Live Performance Round

Preliminary rounds will take place on 07/13 at The Tap in College Station, Texas.

The 20 contestants that advance from the previous video submission round will be placed in two random groups:  A and B.  Group A will need check-in at 2PM for a brief meeting and their performances will begin at 3PM.  Group B will need to check-in for a brief meeting at 7PM and their performances will begin at 8PM

Contestants must play two different ORIGINAL songs. The songs must be no longer than 5 minutes each, it must be solo/acoustic (or 1 singer & and 1 player), and the contestant must perform all music needed.  Contestants are responsible for providing their own instruments.

Judging: Judges will grade contestants on a scale from 1-10 in 5 categories:  vocal ability, performance of musical instrument, songwriting, crowd engagement, and stage presence.

The audience will also be given the chance to vote.  The contestant that receives the most amount of audience votes will receive 10 additional points, the contestants receiving the 2nd most audience votes, will receive 9 points, and so on….The number of audience votes will also act as the tie-breaker between any two artists with the same score.

Advancing: The Top 5 scoring contestants from each group (10 total), will advance to the final round.
